So what do we mean by "unlock cell phone"? When you buy a mobile phone, the service provider will normally "lock" the phone so it can only be used on their network. Service providers often do this in order to make switching or canceling services more difficult for their customers. Unlocking the phone allows you to use your phone on any GSM network in the world carrying the phone's frequency just by putting your SIM card in.
That brings us to why we created this website in the first place, which is simply because too many companies out there are gouging the average person in the cell phone market. Be it service providers, phone manufacturers, or unlock cell phone services, everyone's charging waaaaaaaay more than they should, in search of ever-growing profit margins. When we made this website we wanted to offer a low-cost solution to those people who were looking to unlock their phone, so that they can use it on any GSM network.
In some cases, completely FREE unlocking solutions exist, and we will provide these solutions to you at absolutely no charge (if it doesn't cost us anything, then it shouldn't cost you anything). While we provide these solutions for free, most (if not all) unlock cell phone websites charge for these freely available methods. In some cases, this might be justified because the unlocking process can be complicated and some people just don't feel comfortable doing it on their own (what one person may think is "easy", isn't always easy to someone else).
There are various "unlock cell phone" methods available for unlocking different makes and models of phones. Some phones may be unlocked by entering a series of keypad presses, while others may be unlocked with software. In some cases the solutions will require a hardware cable to connect your phone to your PC (which is normally provided when you buy your phone). Usually newer phones must be unlocked using an IMEI method where unlock codes must be purchased and then these codes must be entered on your phone. These codes are generated by a server which requires a fee to be paid, so we can't provide a free solution to you. But we do provide the lowest possible price for these codes, as we obtain the codes directly from the source.
If a free unlocking solution is not provided on this website for the particular make and model of your phone, or if you are not comfortable unlocking the phone yourself, you will need to use the Pro Unlocking section of the site and purchase an unlock code. If you purchase an unlock code from us, we will strive to provide the best customer support possible and walk you through the process step by step.
If you currently have network service on your phone with a service provider, a good first step is to contact the service provider and inquire whether they will unlock cell phone for free (some companies will do this at no charge, while others may try to charge a hefty fee). If they will not do it for free or attempt to charge a large fee for this service, come back to this website. Even if the phone cannot be unlocked for free, we can usually provide you a low-cost solution likely much lower than what the service providers charge.
Here are some frequently asked questions about phone unlocking (which we refer to as our "unlock cell phone" FAQ):
Q: Why should I unlock my phone?
A: Because then you'll be able to use your mobile phone on any compatible GSM network. So if you switch between two service providers using GSM networks, you can still use the same phone and not have to buy a new one! Also, if your phone is unlocked, you won't have to pay roaming charges while traveling - you can simply use a local cell phone carrier that won't charge for roaming or long distance and still use the same phone. Another advantage is that you can use 2 SIM cards in a single phone and use the service provider of your choice when you want, all on the same phone.
Q: Is unlocking legal? Does it void the warranty on the phone?
A: Yes unlocking is 100% legal and No it does not void manufacturers' warranties.
Q: What is GSM?
A: Basically, there are two main communication standards used by cellular service providers: GSM and CDMA. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications and is the most popular standard. If your phone is not a GSM phone, it cannot be unlocked.
Q: You mentioned 'IMEI' before - what's that?
IMEI is an acronym for International Mobile Equipment Identity. This is a unique 15 digit serial number which identifies the phone, and is required for remote unlocking where the IMEI number must be provided in order to generate the unlock code. There are two ways to find the IMEI number of your phone: 1. By looking on the back of your phone underneath the battery, or 2. By pressing *#06# (Star, Pound, Zero, Six, Pound). Video coming soon!
Q: What's a SIM?
A: SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module and is a device used to store information in mobile phones. Every GSM phone requires a SIM card to operate, and the SIM card is usually placed in a secure compartment underneath the battery.
Q: Which phones can be unlocked?
A: Any phone using a GSM network can be unlocked. Examples: unlock Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple, Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Panasonic, NEC, and many others.
Q: I'm having trouble unlocking my phone. Why?
A: There are a number of possibilities if your phone cannot be unlocked: your phone has been damaged; your phone was stolen and has been blocked from a network; you attempted to unlock your phone and did not perform the correct steps (you inputted the wrong IMEI number, you picked the wrong model, etc etc). Also, if you attempt to unlock your phone incorrectly too many times, it can become permanently locked (hard locked), so please make sure you follow the instructions under the "unlock cell phone" heading properly.
